RULES & POLICIES
Know the Rules. Shoot Confident.
Safety at HISR is non-negotiable. Know these rules before you step on the range, follow them without exception, and listen to the Range Master. If you're ever unsure about something, ask before you load up.
The Non-Negotiables
These apply to every member and every guest, every single visit. There are no exceptions and no second chances. If you have questions, ask a Range Master before you load.
-
Treat every firearm as loaded — always, without exception, even when you know it isn't.
Keep the muzzle pointed downrange at all times. Never let it sweep another person or anything you don't intend to destroy.
Finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until you are ready to fire. Keep the gun on safe until you intend to shoot.
Keep the action open and firearm unloaded until ready to use. Do not rely on the safety alone to prevent a discharge.
-
Know your target and what's beyond it. Shoot only at authorized targets. No water, no hard surfaces, no glass targets of any kind.
Wear eye and ear protection at all times on the range. No exceptions, no excuses.
One shooter per lane during range-hot. Stay at your lane and shoot only at your target.
During a cease fire — stop immediately, render the weapon safe (action open, chamber flag in), step behind the firing line. Do not handle any firearm while others are downrange.
-
If your firearm fails to fire, hold your shooting position for several seconds before carefully unloading with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Never open the action immediately.
Know your firearm and your ammunition. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times — tripping or losing balance with a loaded firearm is a serious hazard.
RANGE
HOT
Weapons firing. Stay at your lane, shoot your targets, stay aware of your surroundings.
20 MINUTES
RANGE
COLD
Cease fire. Render weapons safe, step behind the line. Time for target maintenance and downrange checks.
10 MINUTES
LANE CONTROL
The person in the left-most lane assumes range control unless a Range Safety Officer is present.
TARGETS
Shoot only at your own target. Plastic bottles and jugs are acceptable if placed on the backstop and cleared before you leave.
No glass targets of any kind.
On the Firing Line
The range runs on a structured hot/cold cycle.
Know what to do when commands are called — and know that anyone on the range can call cease fire if they see something unsafe.
CEASE FIRE PROTOCOL
When cease fire is called — stop immediately. Render the weapon safe (action open, chamber flag in), step behind the firing line.
Do not proceed downrange until the all-clear is given.
READY STATE
All weapons remain unloaded and action open with a chamber flag until the order to commence firing is given.
No exceptions at the line.
ANYONE CAN CALL IT
If you observe an unsafe situation, call cease fire immediately. You don't need to be an RSO.
The safety of the range is everyone's responsibility.
DOWNRANGE RULES
No handling of any firearm while people are downrange, even if yours is unloaded.
Step away from the firing line entirely and wait for the all-clear.
Specialized Areas
These apply to every member and every guest, every single visit. There are no exceptions and no second chances. If you have questions, ask a Range Master before you load.
-
Sign in at the Range Office before using the Action Bays, and sign out when you're done. Every visit.
Leave it better than you found it. Collect all garbage, return target stands to the shed before leaving.
Reservations are strongly recommended during peak hours. Basic members pay $10/hour. Silver and Gold members — included.
Guests may use the Action Bays at no additional charge when accompanied by a member.
-
Sign in at the Range Office before using the Steel Park, and sign out when you're done. Every visit.
Do not move the steel targets. If you want a different layout, talk to the Range Office first — this is a firm rule.
No steel or hard targets are allowed on the 25-50 yard range. Steel is allowed on the longer range, but must be set at least 100 yards from the firing line.
Paint the steel after use. Leave the targets painted and the area clean. All garbage collected, target stands returned.
Gold members have unlimited by-appointment access at no charge. Silver and Basic members pay $40/hour per member and guest.
The Steel Park is open to all skill levels — but training is strongly recommended before your first session. Ask the Range Office for guidance.
STEP 1
SIGN THE WAVER.
Every guest must sign the appropriate HISR waiver — online in advance or in the Range Office on arrival. No exceptions.
STEP 2
SIGN IN AT THE RANGE OFFICE.
Members are responsible for signing guests in and out in the Guest Log Book.
This must be done at the Range Office before the guest enters the range area.
STEP 3
GET TO SHOOTING!
Know the range rules, pick your shooting area, and get to shooting.
Members remain responsible for their guests' behavior on the range. Make sure they know the rules before they step onto the line.
Sign your guest out in the Log Book before leaving. Don't skip this step — it's part of keeping the range safe and accurate for everyone.
Bringing a Guest?
All guests must complete and sign the HISR waiver before entering the range — either in the Range Office or online below. Members are responsible for signing guests in and out in the Guest Log Book at the Range Office.
